Zapp (also known as the Zapp Band, Zapp & Roger) is an American funk band that emerged from Dayton, Ohio, United States, in 1977.
Particularly influential in the electro subgenre of funk, Zapp were known for their trademark use of the talk-box effect. The original line-up consisted of four Troutman brothers—frontman Roger, Larry, Lester and Terry—first cousin, Sherman Fleetwood—and non-Troutman family members Bobby Glover, Gregory Jackson, Jerome Derrickson, Eddie Barber, Jannetta Boyce and Shirley Murdock. Zapp also worked closely with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins of Parliament-Funkadelic during its early stages, their support being a factor in the group gaining a record deal with Warner Bros. Records in 1979.
Zapp released its eponymous debut album in 1980, and achieved mainstream recognition with the single "More Bounce to the Ounce". The group's 1982 follow-up Zapp II sold well and was certified gold. In the 1990s, Zapp would also influence the G-funk sound and the broader cultural scene of West Coast hip-hop itself. The band disbanded in 1999 after Roger and Larry Troutman died in an apparent murder-suicide executed by Larry. Zapp reformed briefly in 2003 with the remaining brothers of the Troutman family to produce the album Zapp VI: Back By Popular Demand
SHIRLEY MURDOCK
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Shirley Murdock is best known for her 1986 R&B hit "As We Lay". At the age of 15 she gave her life to the Lord and for a short time and traveled all over the country with T.E.T.R.E.C. (The End Time Revival Evangelistic Crusade) In the early 80’s, Shirley met the legendary Roger Troutman and was signed to Elektra Records, and with a string of R&B hits and gold albums, she was catapulted to the forefront of the music industry.
After meeting the world renowned Bishop T.D. Jakes, not only did he feature her on his 1999 Sacred Love Songs release, he signed her to his label, Dexterity Records.
The new millennium brought Shirley her first Stellar Nominated gospel CD, entitled "Home" and her CD "Soulfood".
"Home" has an urban gospel sound, with flecks of traditional, inspirational and old school funk.
“Many of my R&B fans are still with me and embracing this music as much as anything they remember from the earlier days,” Shirley says. “I see my relationship today with Bishop Jakes and EMI/Dexterity, and “Home”, as bridges being built between the secular and gospel communities. People see now that from day one to this minute there’s always been just one Shirley Murdock. She loves the Lord and has a story to tell. But above all else, she is here to praise His name.” With no selection on the CD actually titled Home, Shirley readily admits that her choice in naming the album goes much deeper than any one song.
“Home, in a word, is where I am,” Shirley concludes. “It’s where I live and where I’ve always lived. This is an opportunity for me to share the gifts God gave me with everyone that God loves… and God loves everyone.”
