From an early age, Juan Escovedo was surrounded by rhythm and melody, teaching himself to play bongos, congas, trap drums, timbales, and an array of percussion instruments. At just 14 years old, he began performing alongside his father, the legendary Pete Escovedo, setting the stage for a lifetime of musical excellence defined by intricate artistry, originality, and a deep dedication to his craft.
Juan is a celebrated percussionist, composer, and bandleader, as well as a key member of his father’s Latin Jazz Orchestra and The E Family—a powerhouse musical collective featuring Pete Escovedo, Sheila E., and Peter Michael Escovedo. The E Family’s acclaimed album Rhythm of the Night, produced and arranged by Peter Michael Escovedo, transforms nine classic Soul and R&B hits into vibrant Latin Jazz, performed with a fourteen-piece orchestra and featuring guest artists including Sheila E., Sy Smith, Simon Russell, and members of the Escovedo family’s next generation.
Juan also believes deeply in giving back to the community and inspiring the next generation of musicians. He has spent the past few years teaching music at the Freedom School at Elite Public Schools and working through the family foundation, Elevate Oakland. Through these programs, students not only explore the art of music but also gain hands-on experience in all aspects of the music business, guided directly by the wisdom and mentorship of the legendary percussionist himself.
On September 17, 2025, Juan Escovedo was honored with the award for Best Jazz Album for his ten-song compilation, The J. He also received nominations in two additional categories, Best Jazz Vocal Single for Baila Cha Cha and Best Remake for his rendition of Simply Red’s Holding Back the Years. Escovedo’s work stood out among an impressive field of nominees, including multi-Grammy winner and nominee Jay King, Lucky Witherspoon, and Tony Mosely.
