WEST COAST PREMIERE: José "Pepito" Gómez's "Traditional Project," featuring Ariacne Trujillo on piano in a quintet of jazz/Cuban musicians.
"Mr. Gomez, who was a member of the band Pupy y los que Son Son before he left Cuba last year ... is another order of performer."
-Ben Ratliff, The New York Times
“All excellent singers have a special tone: it’s something beyond issues of pitch, power and phrasing, some personal grain that makes them strong and strange. The Cuban singer Pepito Gómez’s vocal tone is … a beneficent alarm, a positive shout”
-Ben Ratliff, The New York Times
"José "Pepito" Gómez... could sing fresh life into the dead."
-Descarga.com
"What a Voice! - For the first hour of last night's rehearsal Pepe Gómez sang with a rhythm section of just piano, bass and clave, revealing every resonant nuance of his magnificent tenor voice as he soared through the string of classic hits he created with Pupy Pedroso y Los Que Son Son. Every note is perfectly in-tune, perfectly controlled, and capable of exploding into euphoric emotion at any instant. It took me 8 years to finally hear this guy live but now I fully understand what all the buzz was about."
-Kevin Moore, Timba.com
José "Pepito" Gómez has taken the U.S. by storm since his May 2008 arrival from Cuba. He has two NY Times rave reviews under his belt, received an award from France for best male singer, has a worldwide fan base and his latest CD with Cuban band Pupy y Los Que Son Son, was nominated for a CubaDisco 2009 award. He also received an award in Cuba for his song on environmental awareness, “Tiempo Dificiles” (Hard Times). He has earned the respect and admiration of fellow musicians, press and fans. His popularity all over the world has been highlighted by sold-out venues like the 5000-person capacity La Tropical in Rome. His tenor voice, both beautiful and strong, has a unique timbre which is very rarely found.
Gomez unveiled this breathtaking project in New York to a sold out crowd at Joe's Pub/The Public Theater. The music highlights his extraordinary voice as he pays homage to traditional Cuban classics with a fresh and original jazz influenced twist. A quintet of musicians trained in Havana's best conservatories, includes the extraordinary pianist Ariacne Trujillo who has played with Gomez since his arrival in the U.S. Now Oakland Yoshi's has the privilege of presenting the WEST COAST PREMIERE of the project. ONE SHOW ONLY - advance ticket purchase recommended
