PROGENY
prä-jə-nē
offspring – outcome – product: a body of followers, disciples, or successors
PROGENY... who would you say they sound like? Immediately a hush falls in silent wait for the right answer. Well, to be truthful there is no real answer because they have a sound all their own, and just in case you haven’t heard them, take note. Progeny is a group of young men who have chosen to sing... not to the glory of the world but to the glory of God. Their unique musical artistry and styling have brought them much deserved recognition and distinction wherever they go. Their look is just as refreshing as their sound: youthful, energetic and with stylish presence.
All this said one vital question remains: Can they really sing? One listen to them and the definitive answer is not only yes but, they can also move people by the sheer power of their delivery- power derived from the Anointing. PROGENY says, “What we write and sing about comes from the very places we find ourselves in life, and from those experiences we try to reach people right where they are.”
The mostly original material performed by PROGENY is definitely contemporary gospel with an eclectic blend of R&B, Jazz and Hip hop influence. Individually, the group members present an interesting diversity of styling that, when joined, creates a tapestry of innovation and synergy that leaves you wanting more and more. Their music incorporates flowing melody lines and expressive lyrics that bear a “seasoned” feel and that should come as no surprise, knowing the roots of this group are at the Love Center Church- Oakland, California. In 1989 they came together to sing at the birthday celebration for their pastor, Bishop Walter L. Hawkins. Afterwards, and in the tradition of the legendary Hawkins brothers, Edwin & Walter, they formed a group and named it the Hebrew Boys- Phase II.
Following the success of their premier performance, the group decided to continue spreading God’s word through song. Known by many through the years as PHASE II, the group adopted the name, PROGENY, which means offspring or next generation, and has been performing continuously since. PROGENY has performed at the Sacramento State Fair, Alameda County Fair, CSU- Monterey Bay, CSU San Francisco honoring Ms. Rosa Parks, the Golden State Warriors’ half-time show, Oakland Museum, the Mayor’s Inauguration, Children’s Defense Fund, countless churches and music seminars around the country. In addition, PROGENY has sung live background for George Michael, Lady Tramaine, Nell Carter, Walter Hawkins, Tisha Campbell, Melba Moore, Edwin Hawkins, Patti Austin, Lynette Hawkins- Stephens and has twice appeared in the Black Filmmakers Television Awards show and opened for Oleta Adams
PROGENY can also be heard on the recordings of several gospel artists, including Kelli Williams’, “I Get Lifted”, Walter Hawkins’ Love Alive V and Lady Tramaine’s “Still Tramaine”
Introducing: Mark Brown, Jamie Hawkins, Ladale Kemp, Patrick Sturgis, Antoin Timmons, and Daryl Williams. Together by the grace of God; they are PROGENY.
