“Nicolas Bearde with special featured Guest, Oleg Kireyev”
Combine Bay Area Jazz/R&B recording artist Nicolas Bearde---whose big, velvet tone and perfectly controlled vibrato frequently complements Bobby McFerrin’s vocal ensemble “Voicestra”---with Russian born tenor sax/composer, Oleg Kireyev, and you’ll be treated to a collaboration of world-class jazz greats together on a single stage!
Earlier this year, these two critically acclaimed jazz icons paired up to perform numerous shows in Russia and Siberia and are now bringing their “East Meets West” tour to the United States. Backing the duo will be Bearde’s stellar team of musicians.
Bearde has long been recognized as an adept and fearless vocal improviser, who infuses his jazz vocals with contemporary nuances, and seductive techniques, but who also takes humorous detours into Pop, Soul, Blues, and R&B styles.
He’s been compared to vocal icons such as Lou Rawls, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and Jon Lucien. His most recent album was recorded before a full house at Oakland’s premier jazz club and has garnered rave reviews from around the globe.
“Bay Area Singer Nicolas Bearde sounds like a soul-drenched Mark Murphy with a dash of Sinatra swagger.” Christopher Loudon ~ Jazz Times
“He is a marvelous singer’ reminiscent perhaps more of a Joe Williams than the deeper voiced Rawls, although like both; the blues is part of his performing foundation. Bearde brings warmth, soul and personality to these performances…” Ron Weinstock ~ Jazz&Blues
“Like in his previous albums, Nicolas Bearde shows perfection in his performance and delivers each song with as much soul and love that he can.” Dwight Barrett ~ Just Soul
Oleg Kireyev has always been fascinated by Bashkir folklore and was the first musician in Russia to practice ethno-jazz incorporating Bashkirian folk instruments and guttural singing techniques. His latest release, “Mandala” is a result of his creative explorations into music that combines traditional swing, Bashkir guttural singing, Moldavian tunes, African rhythms, and improvisational jazz.
In 1985, Oleg formed a band called Orlan which became a phenomenal success in Russia. In the early 1990’s he spent three years in Poland and took part in the Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw and played with members of the Miles Davis rhythm section. In 1996, the Oleg Kireyev Quartet was invited to perform at the 30th anniversary of the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland where he was awarded a diploma for outstanding performance and received international recognition.
“Oleg's playing is a marvelous combination of styles, incorporating a whole lot of players. I hear echoes of the 1920’s and John Coltrane combined with the unstructured jazz". Bud Shank
“A Russian sax player with a reputation for hard swing and high excitement…” The Express Star, GBR
“The tenor saxophonist from Ufa in the Urals is establishing a reputation as an entertaining and skilled musician….Revolutionary Russian reedman Oleg Kireyev…” The Evening Mail, GBR
